With the new Red Dead Redemption 2 coming out, I felt like playing the original again and got inspired to recreate John Marston with a little more updated graphics.
This is a study on epic games' amazing Digital Human shaders and realtime characters in general, and an attempt at implementeng Marvelous Designer into the character creation workflow.
I split this project into various little researches for myself: how to properly paint skin, how to create hair textures for Unreal's hair shader, how to properly place hair cards on a mesh, how to create a beard, how to properly retopologize a high res character etc....
All these researches came together and made John a real fun project to work on.
